Balfour Beatty Bags £297 Million East Sussex Highways Deal
East Sussex County Council has handed a major highways and infrastructure contract to Balfour Beatty Living Places Ltd. The deal kicks off on May 1, 2023, with a hefty price tag of £297 million for the first seven years — and the potential to extend up to 14 years worth £730 million.
What’s the Deal?
- Balfour Beatty will maintain roads, pavements, drainage, streetlights, traffic lights, and bridges across East Sussex.
- They’ll handle crucial winter gritting to keep the county moving through icy conditions.
- Highway improvement projects will also come under their watch.
Green Goals and Community Commitment
Winning the contract wasn’t just about price. Bidders had to prove how they’d help East Sussex cut carbon emissions, guarantee top-quality work, offer value for money, and boost social wellbeing.
Cllr Claire Dowling, Lead Member for Transport and Environment, said: “It’s vital our roads are well-maintained and work is of the highest quality for our residents and economy.”
“Balfour Beatty demonstrated they can align with our carbon reduction goals and deliver social benefits including training, apprenticeships, and local projects.”
Industry Experts Ready to Deliver
Steve Helliwell, Managing Director of Balfour Beatty Living Places, said: “This award builds on our extensive experience in highways and infrastructure maintenance nationwide.”
“We’re excited to introduce new technologies and innovative solutions that will help create great places to work, live, and play — leaving a lasting positive legacy in East Sussex.”
