St Athan Station Revival Set to Supercharge Local Economy

The long-dormant rail line at St Athan is about to roar back to life after 60 years. The UK government has green-lit plans for a new station, aiming to turbocharge jobs, education, and business in the Vale of Glamorgan.

Government Backs Major Rail Boost

Transport Secretary Mark Harper dropped by the area on February 19, 2024, to announce full government support for the project. The new St Athan station will improve links to the Cardiff Airport Enterprise Zone and a forthcoming green energy park – prime spots for job creation and investment.

“Bringing rail services back to St Athan after six decades is a game-changer,” said Harper. “It will unlock huge growth potential, draw more business investment, and open thousands of job opportunities.”

Fueling Business Growth and Green Jobs

Welsh Secretary David TC Davies praised the investment as a major win for Wales, highlighting its boost to transport infrastructure and benefits for local residents. The station is set to become a hub, serving the nearby Aston Martin plant and the expanding Cardiff Airport-St Athan Enterprise Zones.

Key plans include:

  • Supporting new businesses in the area
  • Linking employees to the Aston Martin manufacturing and development site
  • Backing Cardiff Capital Region’s green energy park plans at Aberthaw Power Station
  • Creating jobs in aerospace, defence, automotive, manufacturing, and engineering

Next Steps: Feasibility and Funding

The Department for Transport will collaborate with local chiefs and Transport for Wales to develop a solid business case. This includes checking passenger demand, plotting future needs, and weighing train service options. If given the go-ahead, the station could also support upcoming housing schemes, driving a fresh wave of economic progress across the Vale of Glamorgan.
