Royal Navy Heroics Save Yacht Crew from Sinking Disaster

A 36FT monohull yacht began taking on water with five sailors aboard—four severely seasick and struggling to cope.

HMS Diamond Leads the Rescue

HMS Diamond, the Royal Navy’s Type 45 Destroyer, was first on the scene after the yacht sent a Mayday call. They evacuated four of the crew, leaving the skipper onboard. To assist, Diamond’s team sent three sailors to help stabilize the stricken vessel.

The yacht was heading northwest under motor-sail when disaster struck.

RNLI Lifeboats Join the Effort

Newhaven RNLI drew alongside HMS Diamond to take on the seasick casualties. “The four casualties were very seasick, so we needed to get them to the nearest safe port,” explained Lewis Arnold, Newhaven RNLI Coxswain.

At 5am, Newhaven RNLI docked in portsmouth/" title="Portsmouth" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">Portsmouth to deliver the ill sailors to safety. Meanwhile, Bembridge RNLI escorted the damaged yacht to port.

After nearly nine hours of intense rescue work, Newhaven Lifeboat returned to base just before 8am.

Commander Praises Crew’s Bravery and Skill

“When the yacht sent out her distress call, Diamond was in the vicinity and able to respond quickly,” said Commander Peter Barfoot, HMS Diamond’s Commanding Officer.

“We evacuated those needing medical help and sent specialists to assist the skipper, ultimately preventing the vessel from sinking.

“In tough conditions, my team worked tirelessly to save five sailors and keep the yacht afloat. I couldn’t be more proud.”

Following the heroic rescue, HMS Diamond left Portsmouth to join HMS Queen Elizabeth in northern European waters as part of a mighty Carrier Strike Group on Operation Achillean.
