Ronnie O’Sullivan’s quest for a record eighth World Snooker Championship is in serious doubt after an old elbow injury flared up, leaving the Essex potter in tears.
Injury Threatens Rocket’s World Crown
The Rocket, famed for his lightning-fast potting, hurt his elbow lifting weights two years ago. The pain has returned recently, forcing him to pull out of the WST Classic and Championship League.
O’Sullivan revealed he’s been undergoing medical treatments to manage the injury. Yet fears swirl that this elbow problem could wreck his bid to surpass Stephen Hendry’s seven world titles, cementing Ronnie as snooker’s greatest champion.
Snooker Favourite Fighting Back
Despite the injury scare, the 47-year-old remains the 4/1 favourite to win snooker’s biggest crown this year, ahead of rivals Mark Selby (11/2), Judd Trump (6/1), and Neil Robertson (15/2).
But the swelling joint is threatening his iconic cue action. Ronnie admitted the pain was so bad he considered skipping the World Championship.
“The joint swelled up so badly, I even thought about missing it,” he said. “The injections left me with tears in my eyes, but ice treatments have helped.”
With The Crucible showdown starting in April and running through May 1, O’Sullivan hopes to be fit enough to compete.
Snooker’s Rocket Keeps Cool Despite Setbacks
In true Ronnie style, he’s playing down his passion for snooker these days. “It’s a big part of my life, but not all of it,” he confessed, turning his attentions to punditry, business ventures, and writing.
Still, O’Sullivan’s recent form leaves plenty of room for challengers, having failed to get past quarter-finals this season.
Judd Trump might have stumbled this term but his Masters victory in January reminded everyone he’s still a serious threat. Shaun Murphy and Mark Selby have snapped droughts with ranking wins this season, proving their pedigree with five world titles between them.
And don’t count out Mark Williams, Neil Robertson, or Mark Allen – the latter bagged three ranking events including the UK Championship. Winning looks like a habit in this sport.
Who Will Rule The Crucible?
The 2023 Snooker World Championship is anyone’s to claim. But all eyes will be on Ronnie O’Sullivan – can the Rocket overcome a painful elbow and make history with an eighth world title come May?
