Golf Day Horror as Ex-Cop Martin George Goes Into Cardiac Arrest

Martin George, a former police officer, owes his life to quick-thinking firefighters after he suddenly stopped breathing during a round of golf. The dramatic incident happened at Cowdray Park Golf Club on November 4 last year.

Firefighters-turned-Golf Buddies Save the Day

On-call firefighters Dan Moon and Wayne Challen were out on the golf course with Martin when the terrifying moment struck. Without hesitation, they called an ambulance and began CPR on Martin, using the defibrillator stationed at the golf club.

Martin was then airlifted to Queen Alexandra Hospital in portsmouth/" title="Portsmouth" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">Portsmouth for urgent surgery.

Martin Pays Heartfelt Tribute to His Lifesavers

“I cannot thank Dan and Wayne enough for everything they have done for me,” said Martin. “I had back pains that morning and almost skipped the golf outing. In a strange way, I’m glad I didn’t because I was surrounded by people trained in first aid and emergency care, giving me the best chance of survival.”

“Every minute counts in a cardiac arrest. Having a defibrillator on site at Cowdray Park Golf Club was amazing. The staff are also first-aid trained and ready to help anyone else in need. I want to thank them for their precautions and willingness to train.”

“Survival chances are extremely low without immediate CPR and defibrillation, so it’s vital that more people learn these skills,” Martin added.

Fire Service Boss Praises Life-Saving Efforts

Martin visited Midhurst Fire Station with Assistant Chief Fire Officer Peter Rickard to thank Dan and Wayne personally. Peter said:

“Firefighters expect to use first aid on the job, but applying it outside work can be daunting. I’m proud that Wayne and Dan felt confident to act fast in this situation. Their quick reaction was crucial to saving their friend’s life.”

“It’s essential that everyone learns CPR and how to use defibrillators. Our fire stations in busy areas have defibrillators outside the buildings, and all our engines carry them.”
