Sellafield Unions Raise £21,000 for PPE to Shield NHS Heroes

Health and care workers across the UK are scrambling for vital personal protective equipment (PPE). Now, the Sellafield workforce has stepped up to the plate, joining the nationwide effort to keep frontline staff safe.

Unions Unite to Back NHS with Big Funds

Three mighty unions representing Sellafield Ltd employees — Unite, GMB, and Prospect — have teamed up to raise cash for NHS PPE. Their focus? Supporting West Cumberland Hospital and community nursing teams in Copeland and Workington.

The campaign, launched just days ago, has already smashed through the £21,000 mark thanks to generous union members and public donors.

Deliveries of PPE and hand sanitizer are already hitting West Cumbria’s frontline workers hard and fast.

Michael Ashbridge from Unite the Union said:

“We’ve been blown away by the response to our campaign – it’s been just amazing. We’re working around the clock to get as much equipment as we can and distribute it across West Cumbria. Huge thanks to everyone supporting the cause.”

Coordination is Key: Cumbria’s PPE Effort

Sellafield Ltd is part of a county-wide PPE coordination led by the Cumbria Resilience Forum. This collective, which includes emergency services and the NHS, makes sure PPE gets to where it’s needed most.

Businesses needing PPE should contact the Multi-Agency Support Team (MAST) at [email protected]. Similarly, companies with surplus PPE ready to donate can reach out to MAST via the same email.

Mark Neate, Sellafield’s Director of Environment, Safety and Security, said:

“As West Cumbria’s biggest employer, we’re doing all we can to back the community’s fight against the pandemic. Sharing PPE turned out to be one of the simplest and most effective ways to help. We’re collaborating closely with local partners to coordinate this response.”

3D Printing PPE: Sellafield Innovates for Safety

Not stopping at fundraising, Sellafield employees and suppliers, both locally and in Warrington, are tapping into 3D printing tech. They’re crafting bespoke protective visors and other PPE to arm health and care workers with top-quality gear.

The Sellafield team clearly means business when it comes to keeping Cumbria’s frontline safe and stocked.
