London Fire Brigade Deploys Dozens to Battle Lancashire Moorland Blaze
Almost 300 London firefighters volunteered today to tackle the huge moorland fire raging in Lancashire. After a mutual aid call, 36 were selected to join the frontline effort.
Six reserve fire engines left Finchley fire station at noon, heading to Chorley. Their mission: support fire crews battling the inferno around Winter Hill in Greater Manchester and Lancashire.
Massive Response From London Firefighters
London Fire Commissioner Dany Cotton praised the team’s swift commitment. “Within hours of the request, nearly 300 firefighters offered help,” she said. “Large grass fires are tough and technically challenging, so I’m grateful so many stepped up.”
“All fire brigades and emergency services share one goal: save lives, property, and the environment. We stand united in a crisis.”
Mutual Aid: Fire Brigades Joining Forces
London Fire Brigade regularly supports other services nationwide through mutual aid agreements. Firefighters are deployed for an initial four days, with possible extensions based on the situation.
Recent deployments include specialist crews tackling severe floods in Lancashire and Cumbria and fighting fires on London’s borders.
Equipment and Coverage
- Six fire engines, each staffed by six firefighters
- Equipped with hose lines, hand control branches, water backpacks, and beaters
- All reserve fleet vehicles; not frontline appliances
- London’s local fire coverage remains unaffected by the deployment
The Brigade’s quick response highlights the vital teamwork across UK emergency services when disaster strikes.
