Penkridge Road Shut After Burst Water Main Sparks Subsidence Scare
A major road in Penkridge has been slammed shut after a burst water pipe triggered fears of ground subsidence near a popular local pub.

Just after 5:30pm on Wednesday, firefighters, police, and Canal & River Trust officials rushed to The Boat Inn on Cannock Road. Early reports sparked panic that the bridge over the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal had collapsed.
Staffordshire Fire and Rescue warned on Facebook: “The bridge over the canal has collapsed; the road is currently closed for pedestrian and vehicular access while we work with our partners.”
Bridge Stands Firm, But Ground Movement Suspected
Further checks revealed the bridge was safe. Instead, ground movement near a nearby house – likely caused by the burst water pipe – is the real culprit behind the scare.
Cannock Road Closed – Motorists Told to Find Alternatives
The stretch of Cannock Road between Greenways and Haling Road remains closed as safety inspections continue. Drivers are urged to seek alternative routes to avoid delays.
