£8 Million Exceat Bridge Upgrade Gets Green Light!
The South Downs National Park Authority has given the thumbs-up to the £8 million Exceat Bridge Scheme. The much-needed project will replace the old, single-lane bridge on the A259 over the River Cuckmere with a brand-new, two-lane bridge featuring a footpath.
Major Roadworks and Traffic Calming Ahead
The scheme includes realigning and rebuilding the bridge, plus re-profiling the river and road embankments for better safety and flow. Drivers can expect traffic calming measures between the Seven Sisters Country Park and Seaford, easing congestion and enhancing road safety.
There will also be changes to access roads and a new shared surface near the Cuckmere Inn, improving pedestrian and cyclist safety alike.
Eco-Boost with New Wetlands
Environmental efforts are central to the plan, with a habitat creation area set to restore farmland back into wetlands on the east bank of the Cuckmere Valley. This comes with full backing from an Environmental Statement, promising greener outcomes alongside infrastructure improvements.
Local MP Hails the Approval
Maria Caulfield MP said: “This is brilliant news. We have been campaigning tirelessly to ensure planning for the Exceat Bridge Scheme is approved and I am thrilled it has now been given the go-ahead so work can finally begin.
Myself and County Cllr Sam Adeniji have held countless meetings with authorities and locals to push this through. I know it will be hugely welcomed by residents.”
The entire project is expected to wrap up within two years, promising smoother journeys and a greener landscape for the South Downs area.
