Daylight attack in Portsmouth sparks police hunt for witnesses
Police are urgently seeking witnesses after a 46-year-old man was assaulted outside Portsmouth University on Waltham Street last Saturday afternoon.
Daytime brawl on busy street
The attack happened between 4pm and 4.45pm on March 4, right outside the university building. The victim was with a friend when two men crossing the road towards Winston 1 Avenue launched the assault. Witnesses also reported racist remarks from the attackers during the incident.
Police want your eyes and ears
Officers are appealing to anyone who saw a scuffle involving four men around the university area. Police Staff Investigator Julie Kirkpatrick said: “This is usually a busy pedestrian route into Portsmouth city centre via Guildhall Square. Since this happened in broad daylight, someone will likely have seen what went down.”
She added: “The victim and his friend were dressed smartly, while the two men involved in the assault were in jeans.”
Two men arrested and bailed
- A 50-year-old man from Southsea was arrested on suspicion of common assault.
- A 43-year-old man from Portsmouth faces suspicion of assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
Both suspects have been bailed until April 3.
