Majority of Brits Taking Action on Climate – But Most Think It’s Not Enough
A fresh YouGov poll reveals 59% of Brits are actively chopping their carbon footprints. Even more striking, 17% stick to eco-friendly choices even when it’s a hassle.
But despite individual efforts, a whopping 65% say the UK as a whole isn’t doing nearly enough to tackle climate change.
Climate Crisis Demands Urgent Action Now
Though some global warming is already locked in thanks to past emissions, acting now can stop the worst disasters looming ahead.
“Everyone can see that we’re experiencing more frequent extreme weather,” said Prof Jason Lowe OBE, Head of Climate Services at the Met Office. “Many damaging events are linked to human-driven climate change. The good news? Brits are engaged and want to do more.”
“But cutting greenhouse gases fast is vital. We also have to adapt our lifestyles to handle the climate impacts we can’t avoid.”
Public Sees Clear Link Between Climate Change and Extreme Weather
The survey shows 76% believe climate change partly causes extreme weather events. More than a third (34%) blame climate change fully for harsh weather, while 42% say it’s a key factor but not the only one.
They recall July 2022’s record-breaking UK heatwave hitting 40.3°C – a clear climate alarm bell.
Dr Camilla Mathison of the Met Office adds: “Small changes like walking or cycling short trips cut CO2 emissions, boost air quality, and improve health. It all adds up.”
Get Climate Ready: How to Help and Adapt
The Met Office, working with partners, runs the Get Climate Ready campaign to guide the public through tackling climate change challenges.
Simple lifestyle tweaks can shield the planet from the worst, and help Brits prepare for the changes already headed our way.
