Portsmouth Tops England’s STI Charts with Sky-High Chlamydia Rates
Portsmouth has earned a dubious distinction as the UK’s hotspot for chlamydia, Public Health England data reveals. In 2020, the city recorded a staggering 1,410 new chlamydia cases — that’s a whopping 657 per 100,000 people. This isn’t just the highest in Hampshire; it’s the worst in the entire southeast.
STI Crisis Unfolds Across Portsmouth
When factoring in all sexually transmitted infections (STIs) such as gonorrhoea, syphilis, and herpes, Portsmouth ranks as the 20th highest STI hotspot in England.
The local public health team explains that since 2017, STI rates have exceeded the national average — partly because Portsmouth tests more people than many other areas. Helen Atkinson, Director of Public Health, warned:
“Some STIs don’t show symptoms or can remain hidden for ages. Delays in diagnosis can lead to serious health issues.”
She urges residents to:
- Discuss contraception options openly with partners.
- Use condoms—the only contraception to prevent STIs.
- Get tested regularly, especially with new partners.
- Follow treatment advice promptly to safeguard yourself and others.
Super Gonorrhoea Warning Hits England
Health chiefs have sounded the alarm after four cases of “super gonorrhoea” emerged — a strain resistant to antibiotics — all in people in their 20s across England.
Portsmouth reported 206 regular gonorrhoea cases in 2020, placing it 53rd highest nationally. The rise mirrors trends in similar UK cities, the public health team confirmed.
Roger Batterbury, Chair of Healthwatch Portsmouth, noted:
“As a university city with high population density and health inequalities, easing Covid restrictions may have sparked an increase in STI cases.”
