Rare White Lobster 'Lizzie' Caught Off Hampshire Coast

A Hampshire fisherman has landed a stunning white lobster, a catch so rare it’s been nicknamed ‘Lizzie’ to mark the Queen’s 90th birthday. Dan Langford, 20, of Langford Lobsters, hauled the ghostly crustacean from secret waters off the Isle of Wight.

Fisherman Stunned by Ghostly Catch

Dan spotted a bright shape in his pots but only realised what it was when opening it. “We fish for lobsters regularly, but none of us – me, my dad, or grandad – has ever seen one like this,” he revealed.

Knowing its rarity, Dan called in the experts at Portsmouth’s Blue Reef Aquarium, where Lizzie is now on public display. “We didn’t have a home for her and thought everyone should get a chance to see this amazing lobster,” Dan added.

Meet Lizzie – The Not-So-Albino Lobster

Lobsters have roamed the seas for over 100 million years and can live past 60 years. Blue Reef’s Martyn Chandler explained Lizzie’s unusual look: “She’s bright white but not a true albino since her eyes aren’t pink or red. Still, she’s incredibly rare and in great shape.”

Lobster Facts You Didn’t Know

  • Lobsters have one ‘crusher’ claw and one ‘cutter’ claw, similar to left- or right-handedness in humans.
  • The claw used most often becomes the powerful crusher, perfect for breaking crab shells.
  • They can regrow lost limbs and even regenerate eyes – true masters of survival.

Lizzie’s spectacular colour and story have made her an instant star. For a glimpse of this rare crustacean, visit Portsmouth’s Blue Reef Aquarium before she heads back to the wild.
