Pepco Group Rescues Wilko with Massive Poundland Takeover

Pepco Group, the powerhouse behind Poundland, has swooped in to save Wilko. The deal sees Pepco snapping up leases for up to 71 struggling Wilko stores, injecting fresh hope into the flagging retailer and protecting countless jobs across the UK.

Wilko’s Fate Turned Around After Financial Woes

Wilko, in administration since August due to huge losses, looked destined for collapse. But this lifeline from Poundland’s owner changes everything. Pepco plans to convert these Wilko outlets into its signature discount stores, promising a swift reopening once administration wraps up.

Barry Williams, Poundland’s managing director, said: “We recognise the tough weeks Wilko staff have endured. They will get priority when applying for jobs in the new Poundland stores.”

High Street Shake-Up: What This Means for Shoppers

This deal reshapes the UK’s retail scene. Shoppers will see former Wilko stores transformed with new signage, stock, and layouts, becoming part of Poundland’s 800-strong network.

The pandemic shifted customer habits towards out-of-town retail parks, hitting traditional High Street shops like Wilko hard, especially for bulkier goods. This deal aims to revitalise those areas.

Rivals Also Snapping Up Wilko Properties

Meanwhile, discount chain B&M has struck a separate £13 million deal to take over 51 Wilko stores — but these won’t carry the Wilko name.

Administrators confirmed that while many Wilko workers face job losses after a failed rescue bid, the Poundland deal offers a lifeline with new job opportunities. Talks with other retailers are also underway, including plans to sell Wilko’s brand and intellectual property.

The Wilko Stores Saved by Pepco

Pepco’s haul covers shops across the UK, from Aberdare to Wembley, including:

  • Aberdare
  • Barking
  • Bolton
  • Cambridge
  • Grimsby
  • Havant
  • Peterlee
  • Stafford
  • Wembley
  • Worcester
  • …and many more, including Wilko’s HQ town of Worksop.

This takeover could be a game-changer, breathing new life into High Streets and giving Wilko’s staff a fresh start.
