Flood Defence Project in Preston and South Ribble Scoops Top Construction Award
The Preston and South Ribble Flood Risk Management Scheme has bagged the coveted Considerate Constructors Scheme 2024 National Site Award. This recognition marks a major step forward as the £54.7 million project races towards completion.
High Praise for Construction and Community Efforts
Phil Mahon from VolkerStevin, the contractors behind the flood scheme, proudly accepted the award. The accolade celebrates the team’s outstanding delivery and their commitment to going beyond basic requirements.
The scheme is set to provide top-notch flood protection for thousands of homes and businesses along the River Ribble and River Darwen in Preston and South Ribble.
Building with Care: Community, Environment, Workforce
The Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS) pushes construction firms to exceed legal standards. Projects under CCS follow a strict Code of Considerate Practice focused on:
- Respect for local communities
- Environmental care
- Valuing workers on site
A recent CCS audit praised the Preston and South Ribble scheme for excellent community communication, positive environmental impact, and strong partnerships with local schools and charities.
“This award is a testament to our exceptional efforts respecting the community, environment, and workforce,” said Mark Reed from VolkerStevin. “We’re thrilled our dedication has been recognised.”
Flood Defences Taking Shape with Major Milestones
Progress is marching on fast. Along Broadgate and Riverside, key milestones have been reached, including the installation of glass panels as part of flood defences. Over in South Ribble, embankment and revetment work is complete with a new flood wall now underway.
This award highlights the critical role the flood scheme plays in protecting communities from severe flooding. With its excellent construction standards and community focus, it’s setting the bar high for flood risk projects across the country.
