Animal Rights Activists Storm DEFRA Building in Bird Flu Protest
Two daring protesters from the Animal Justice Project scaled the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) building in central London this morning. Clad in hazmat suits, they aimed to spotlight the soaring bird flu crisis and the dark side of intensive farming.
High-Risk Stunt for a High-Stakes Cause
The activists climbed the outer wall of the government building before unfurling a massive banner demanding an end to animal agriculture. Their message was stark: pandemics like bird flu are linked to factory farming, which also wreaks havoc on animal welfare.
“Activists today are braving the elements and dizzying heights to highlight our government’s inaction on the urgent and catastrophic outbreak of bird flu that is tearing through intensive chicken sheds at lightning speed,” said Hope Wetherall, campaigner for the Animal Justice Project.
“Modern agriculture causes immense suffering and poses a very real risk to humans. Yet politicians only respond with avian influenza zones and mass culls — measures that miss the root of the problem.”
“It is critical that government agencies such as DEFRA take proactive and meaningful action right away.”
Police Respond to Scaled DEFRA Building
The Met Police confirmed officers were called just before 6.30 a.m. to reports of two protesters climbing the Marsham Street government building. Specialized units responded swiftly. The situation was ongoing and no arrests had been made at the time.
