Massive Rammey Marsh Blaze Sparks London Fire Brigade Alarm
A huge grass fire erupted on Rammey Marsh on Tuesday afternoon, forcing London Fire Brigade (LFB) into action with a massive response. Ten fire engines and around 70 firefighters rushed to tackle the fast-spreading flames amid the soaring heatwave.
Flames Rampage Across Parched Grassland
The fire broke out at around 3pm, quickly sweeping across the tinder-dry grass. Thick smoke billowed over the M25 between junctions 25 and 26, triggering warnings for motorists navigating the busy motorway.
LFB deployed a drone team to scout the fire’s extent and guide crews through the tough terrain, honing their efforts to bring the blaze under control.
Fire Brigade Blames Careless BBQs and Cigarette Tossers
“This summer has seen an unprecedented long dry spell with high temperatures, so the grass in London is tinder-box dry and the smallest of sparks can start a blaze which could cause devastation,” said an LFB spokesperson.
Despite repeated warnings, people are still firing up barbecues in parks, flicking cigarettes from cars, and leaving rubbish to pile up in dry areas. These careless acts risk sparking more devastating fires during this extreme weather.
Thankfully, no injuries have been reported from the Rammey Marsh blaze.
Residents Urged to Stay Vigilant as Heatwave Smoulders On
Authorities have launched a stern appeal to the public to:
- Avoid using barbecues in open green spaces and on balconies
- Dispose of cigarettes responsibly – no flicking from vehicles
- Take all rubbish home or use designated bins
With UK temperatures expected to hit 28°C and dry conditions persisting, the risk of wildfires remains high. Fire crews are on red alert, warning everyone to stay cautious or face potentially devastating consequences.
