Havant Gears Up to Honour Falklands War 40 Years On
Havant Borough is paying tribute to the 40th anniversary of the Falklands War with a special service and parade. The event marks the heroic British liberation of the islands in 1982.
Parade and Ceremony in Town Centre
On Sunday, June 19, at 3 p.m., a parade will march through Havant Town Centre before wreaths are laid at the War Memorial. The Rose and Thistle Pipes and Drums will lead the procession along West Street to St Faith’s Church.
The service is organised by Havant Borough Council, the Royal British Legion (RBL) Havant branch, and Alan Mak MP. The Mayor of Havant and a Deputy Lieutenant from Hampshire will lead a short outdoor ceremony. Inside the church, Rev Canon Tim Schofield will conduct a service attended by armed forces veterans, serving personnel, and local dignitaries.
Remembering the Falklands Conflict
The Falklands War began on April 2, 1982, when Argentine forces invaded the islands 7,000 miles south of the UK. The conflict lasted three months and saw heavy losses on both sides. British forces, including the Royal Navy, RAF, Royal Marines, Parachute Regiment, and Special Boat Service, fought relentlessly to reclaim the territory. The war officially ended on June 14, 1982.
“My thoughts will be with all who lost their lives, as well as those injured and the families affected,” said Councillor Diana Patrick, Mayor of Havant. “I vividly recall watching our forces return after liberating the islands – grateful for those who made it home, yet saddened for those who did not.”
“I am confident many in our borough will join ex-service men and women to mark this anniversary with the dignity it deserves,” she added. “I hope everyone can come to reflect on this event that took place over 8,000 miles away.”
Alan Mak, MP for Havant, said: “Having visited the Falkland Islands to pay tribute to those involved, I welcome the chance to honour their service here. Given our area’s important role in the Liberation, I urge local residents to support this meaningful event.”

- The parade kicks off at 2:40 p.m. from the Royal British Legion Ex-Servicemen’s Club on Brockhampton Lane.
