Hero Paramedic Saves Baby Girl in Dramatic Pre-Birth Emergency
A touching reunion took place when baby Fia Siciliano, just three months old, met the London Ambulance Service paramedic who helped save her life before she was even born.
Terrifying Moment for Mum-to-Be
Last October, Fia’s mum, Therese Siciliano, 40, faced a nightmare. While picking up her daughter from school, she suddenly started bleeding heavily – a terrifying ordeal for any expectant mother.
“I have never been so scared in my life,” Therese recalled. “I was doing my best to stay calm, but I truly feared my little girl wasn’t going to survive.”
Therese’s husband, David, dialled 999 immediately. Minutes later, paramedic Katie Vaughan arrived in her fast-response car. Katie assessed the emergency and quickly realised Fia’s life was in serious danger. She called for backup straight away.
Against All Odds, Baby’s Heartbeat Detected
Therese still remembers the agony: “In the ambulance, I was preparing for the worst and telling my husband we had to be ready for the baby not surviving.”
But thanks to the rapid response team and skilled staff at St George’s Hospital in South London, they heard the miracle sound – Fia’s heartbeat.
“I was 95% sure Fia wasn’t going to make it,” Katie admitted. “Hearing that heartbeat brought tears of joy to my eyes – it was a career-defining moment.”
The next morning, Therese gave birth to a healthy baby girl weighing a whopping 10 pounds 6 ounces.
Emotional Thanks and Lifesaving Teamwork
Just a week later, Therese wrote a heartfelt letter to the Ambulance Service praising Katie’s incredible care. This led to a warm reunion at Wimbledon Ambulance Station.
“Katie made me feel so safe and comforted,” said Therese. “The hug she gave me when we found out Fia had made it meant the world. She looked after me not just as a paramedic but as a fellow mother and human.”
Every year, London Ambulance Service handles around 13,000 pregnancy-related emergency calls. Since 2015, they have a dedicated maternity team trained to manage these critical situations.
Camella Main, Lead Midwife at the Service, praised Therese and David’s calm reactions and Katie’s outstanding work, emphasising how vital quick action is when lives hang in the balance.
This heartwarming story showcases the dedication and compassion of paramedics like Katie Vaughan, who turn moments of fear into miracles for families in their darkest hours.
