Sunak Pulls the Plug on HS2 Northern Leg

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has finally put an end to weeks of speculation by scrapping the northern section of the HS2 high-speed rail project. The ambitious line will now stop at Birmingham instead of reaching Manchester.

Sunak dropped the bombshell during the closing speech at the Conservative Party conference, ending days of dodging questions on the controversial move.

Billions Saved, But Critics Slam Decision

The PM insists the £36 billion saved won’t go to waste. Instead, the cash will be pumped into new transport projects across the North, Midlands, and other regions. Sunak promised: “We will reinvest every single penny saved from HS2” to bring quicker, broader improvements to infrastructure.

But not everyone’s convinced. Tory West Midlands Mayor Andy Street slammed the U-turn as “an incredible political gaffe”. Labour’s Andy Burnham added fuel to the fire, warning that scrapping HS2 northwards would badly hit connectivity and stunt regional growth.

Sunak Vows Equal Investment Outside London

The Chancellor insists every region outside the capital will see the same or more government investment compared to what HS2 would have delivered. The plan is to roll out hundreds of new transport initiatives nationwide, delivering results faster and more efficiently.

Still, the fallout is just beginning as the government faces pressure over the future of Britain’s transport revolution.
