Brighton & Hove Albion fans gave a roaring tribute to local hero Roger Cohen MBE at today’s packed Amex Stadium. The crowd watched an emotional halftime video celebrating his incredible 42 years with the RNLI, honouring a lifetime spent saving lives at sea.
Roger Cohen’s Lifesaving Legacy
The heartfelt film showcased Roger’s fearless career, which began in 1982. From crew member to helm at Brighton RNLI, to key roles at the busiest UK lifeboat station on the Thames, Roger’s courage and leadership saved countless lives.
- 2,260 launches—a record-breaking commitment
- 248 lives rescued from deadly sea dangers
Roger later managed lifeboat operations at both Brighton and Newhaven, proving a pillar of strength and expertise. His very last day on the job saw him answer a final call-out—a fitting end to four decades of service—even though the mission was stood down.
Words from the Lifeboat Legend
At a special event at Saltdean Lido, attended by past and present crews, Roger reflected on his incredible tenure:
“Forty-two years, one month and 21 days is hard to sum up. The boats have changed, but the dedication of the crews remains the same.”
He urged current RNLI teams to “respect the sea” and praised lifelong friendships built through the service.
Champion of Inclusion and Progress
Roger didn’t just save lives — he changed the game. Under his leadership, Brighton RNLI became the UK’s first LGBT-accredited lifeboat station and was the first to take part in Brighton Pride. His commitment to diversity and modernisation stands tall alongside his heroic deeds.
In 2024, Roger represented the RNLI at its bicentenary celebration at Westminster Abbey. In 2022, he was awarded an MBE by HRH The Princess Royal at Windsor Castle, a well-deserved honour.
Tributes Pour In for a True RNLI Legend
Ryan Hall, RNLI Head of Region, praised Roger’s unshakable legacy:
“Roger truly embodies the RNLI’s values. His leadership has shaped our stations and culture. We wish him the very best in his well-deserved retirement.”
Though stepping down at Brighton, Roger will continue to serve at Newhaven RNLI until the end of 2025.
The halftime tribute drew loud cheers and heartfelt applause from Albion fans, many visibly moved by one man’s extraordinary dedication to saving lives and building a stronger, more inclusive community.
