£3.2 Million Emergency Funding to Help Rough Sleepers Self-Isolate Amid COVID-19

The government is pumping £3.2 million into emergency funding to help rough sleepers and those at risk self-isolate and stop the spread of coronavirus. This cash boost will cover local authorities across England, reimbursing them for the cost of accommodation and vital services for people sleeping rough.

A Huge Push Against Rough Sleeping – £643 Million Over Four Years

This fresh emergency fund adds to the £492 million already committed in 2020-21, representing a £124 million rise from the previous year. Altogether, £643 million is earmarked over four years to tackle homelessness and get rough sleepers off the streets for good.

Communities Secretary Rt Hon Robert Jenrick MP said: “Public safety and protecting the most vulnerable people in society from coronavirus is this government’s top priority.” He urged anyone worried about someone sleeping rough to use the government’s StreetLink app, which alerts local support services to help those in need.

Rapid Support for Those Who Can’t Self-Isolate

  • This funding targets people staying in night shelters, assessment hubs, and those out on the streets who can’t self-isolate.
  • Public Health England (PHE) has issued guidance for hostels and day centres on managing suspected COVID-19 cases, including how to handle shared spaces and vulnerable residents.
  • Dr Yvonne Doyle, PHE’s Medical Director, warned: “People sleeping rough are often in poor health and are particularly vulnerable. That’s why this funding is so important.”

Government Ramps Up Support with Taskforces and Hardship Funds

The government is not stopping there. A £5 billion COVID-19 Response Fund and a new £500 million Hardship Fund aim to back economically vulnerable people and local councils. A special taskforce, led by former resilience experts Andy Battle and Dr Ruth Hussey, is in place to strengthen local outbreak plans.

Robert Jenrick added: “We are working closely with councils and charities to ensure they have the support they need throughout this period.”

Funding Details and Next Steps

  • Local authorities will be notified of their provisional funding based on the Autumn 2019 rough sleeper count.
  • Most of the £500 million Hardship Fund is expected to provide extra council tax relief.
  • The government pledges ongoing monitoring and cooperation with Public Health England and local authorities.
