Russia Threatens Retaliation Over US Black Sea Drone Flights
Russia’s Defense Ministry has fired a warning shot at the United States, signalling it may respond forcefully to American reconnaissance drone flights over the Black Sea. Moscow has ordered officials to prepare a “response” to curb the growing US drone activity.
Drone Spying Fuels Black Sea Tensions
The surge in US drone missions over the Black Sea has rattled Moscow. The Russian Defense Ministry claims these drones are gathering intelligence and preparing targeting data for precision weapons supplied by the West to Ukrainian forces. These arms are reportedly used for strikes on Russian targets.
The escalating drone patrols highlight a deeper US and NATO involvement backing Ukraine against Russia, raising the stakes in the region. Moscow has warned that such reconnaissance flights risk dangerous incidents with Russian military aircraft and could spark a direct NATO-Russia clash. It laid the blame for escalation squarely on NATO members.
Flashpoint History: Drone Incidents Stir Danger
This isn’t the first time US drones have provoked Moscow’s ire. Last year, a Russian fighter jet damaged an American drone over the Black Sea, causing it to crash. Another confrontation like that could dangerously ramp up hostilities.
Recent Strikes and Rising Risks
Russia’s warning comes after a Ukrainian missile strike on Sevastopol using US-supplied ATACMS missiles, which killed four and injured around 150. Russia accuses the US of providing targeting intel for these attacks on Crimea, annexed by Moscow in 2014. Residents there have been told to keep tourniquets handy amid fears of more assaults.
To add fuel to the fire, a Ukrainian drone recently hit a petrol depot deep inside Russia. With tit-for-tat strikes and close surveillance between sides, the Black Sea remains a volatile flashpoint in the ongoing Ukraine conflict.
