Search for Missing British Teen in Tenerife Called Off

The Civil Guard has officially called off the search for Jay Slater, the 19-year-old British teenager who vanished in Tenerife’s remote Masca area. Despite ending the physical hunt, authorities stress that the investigation remains very much open.

Who Is Jay Slater?

Jay Slater, an apprentice bricklayer from Oswaldtwistle near Blackburn, Lancashire, disappeared on the morning of June 17 after attending the NRG music festival in Tenerife. The young man was last seen in the rugged northwestern mountain village of Masca.

Volunteers Join Massive Hunt

On Saturday, hundreds of locals and tourists teamed up with the Civil Guard for a “massive search” across the treacherous terrain. Despite their combined efforts to scour every inch of the area, no sign of Jay was found, leading officials to halt the search.

Last Known Whereabouts

Masca resident Ofelia Medina Hernandez spotted Jay at around 8am on June 17. Jay had missed the bus back to his accommodation and decided to make the 11-hour walk on foot. During a call to a friend at 8.30am, he said he was lost, thirsty, and his phone battery was at just 1%.

“I told him when the next bus was at 10am,” said Ms. Hernandez. “But he set off on foot and I later saw him walking fast along the road.”

Family Pleas & Online Sleuths

Jay’s family has been tirelessly searching, sharing a blurry image in hopes someone will recognise him. The case has drawn attention from online detectives, some even travelling to Tenerife to aid the search. However, rampant rumours and conspiracy theories are causing confusion and hampering progress.

Investigation Continues

Though the physical search in Masca has ended, the Civil Guard insists the investigation into Jay’s disappearance is ongoing. Authorities urge anyone with information to come forward immediately.

Hope Lives On

Despite the grim pause in searching, Jay’s family and the community remain hopeful for his safe return. The outpouring of support from volunteers and locals highlights the human spirit fighting to bring this missing teenager home.
