Massive Blaze in Purley Sends 72 Firefighters Rushing
Ten fire engines and 72 firefighters have descended on Brighton Road in Purley after a major fire broke out this afternoon. The Brigade was alerted at 3pm and quickly dispatched crews from London, with extra support called in from Surrey.
Fire Crews Battle Blaze from Multiple Stations
Firefighters from Croydon, Norbury, Sutton, Wallington, Addington, and neighbouring stations are battling the flames. The cause of the fire remains unknown, but initial reports suggest a builder working in the roof space triggered the alarm after sparks set part of the property alight.
Flats and Shops Suffer Serious Damage
The fire has damaged two flats, while two shops nearby have been hit hard by smoke and water damage. Emergency teams are still assessing the full extent of the destruction.
