Fools Risk Lives Posing on Cracked Seaford Cliff Edge
Coastguards have blasted thrill-seekers ignoring deadly warnings to stay away from the unstable chalk cliffs near Seaford, East Sussex. Just days after a large section of cliff collapsed, a couple was snapped shamelessly posing precariously close to a deep crack.
Danger Lurks at East Sussex’s Stunning Coastline
The cliff’s edge remains highly unstable, with further collapses expected at any moment. Despite extra warning signs and roped-off zones, some visitors continue to flout safety advice.
“We’ve received pictures of people dangerously close to the crack less than a week after repeated warnings,” said HM Coastguard.
The sheer drop is terrifyingly steep, and locals watching gasped in disbelief as the couple risked everything for a photo op.
Officials Warn: Stay Back and Check The Tide
East Sussex County Council’s Claire Dowling urged visitors to respect the coastline’s dangers:
“The cliffs are extremely unstable and prone to regular chalk falls. Don’t underestimate the risks standing on or beneath the cliffs. Also, beware of incoming tides—they can catch you out fast.”
The #BeCliffAware and #BeTideAware campaigns stress the importance of safety along this gorgeous but treacherous stretch of coast. Several local authorities collaborate to get the message out.
Don’t Die For a Selfie: Coastguard’s Plea
- Keep at least 5 metres from cliff edges
- Use signposted coastal paths only
- Heed all warning signs
- Return before dark
Matt Pavitt, HM Coastguard’s south east area commander, said:
“The cliffs can crumble without warning, taking you down. A selfie is never worth risking your life.”
“If you see danger or someone needing help, call 999 immediately and ask for the Coastguard. Do not attempt a rescue yourself.”
