Shoreham RNLI Crew Battle Triple Emergency in One Hectic Saturday
Volunteer lifesavers at Shoreham RNLI had no time to catch their breath on Saturday 4 May 2025. The all-weather and inshore lifeboats were launched three times, tackling separate sea emergencies and keeping the public safe along the coast.
Sleeping Crew Sparks Alarm on Fishing Trawler
The first call came at 9:40am when the all-weather lifeboat was scrambled to a fishing trawler eight nautical miles south of Newhaven. The vessel’s crew had failed to answer repeated radio calls and even a ship horn blast.
Upon boarding, the volunteers found all three crew members sound asleep with no one on watch. Thankfully, the fishermen were safe and unharmed. The lifeboat then returned to station without further incident.
Angling Boat Breakdown Causes Sea Hazard
At 4:20pm, the all-weather lifeboat raced to help a 27-foot angling boat stranded six miles south of Shoreham. The boat had suffered a gearbox failure and was drifting, posing a risk to sea traffic.
Following Coastguard instructions, the lifeboat crew towed the vessel and its three occupants safely back to Shoreham Harbour. A timely rescue prevented any escalation.
Paddleboarders Struggle Near Hove Lawns
While the tow was underway, the inshore lifeboat launched to assist two paddleboarders struggling some 400 metres off Hove Lawns.
Fortunately, the pair made it ashore unaided just before help arrived, avoiding a full rescue operation.
RNLI Boss Hails Volunteer Heroes
Colin Scott, Shoreham RNLI Launch Authority, applauded the team’s efforts:
“Our volunteer crews have had a busy Saturday with three launches to separate incidents, which we are pleased to say have all had a successful outcome.”
The day’s drama underscores the vital role RNLI volunteers play in protecting lives and ensuring safety at sea. Shoreham’s heroes answered the call – not once, but three times – proving just how crucial their work remains.
