UK SAR Upgrade: ARTEMIS Tech Joins Next-Gen Helicopter Fleet
Smith Myers’ cutting-edge ARTEMIS Mobile Phone Location and Communications system is set to boost the UK’s second-generation Search and Rescue (SAR) programme, UKSAR2G. Nova Systems has picked ARTEMIS to integrate into their airborne mission system, which will be fitted on the UK’s helicopter fleet.
10-Year Lifesaving Mission Gets Tech Boost
This new 10-year deal combines rotary and fixed-wing aircraft, including unmanned aerial systems (UAS), into a fully integrated SAR solution led by Bristow Helicopters Ltd. The move guarantees vital search and rescue aviation services across the UK well into the next decade.
ARTEMIS will be installed across the entire fleet of helicopters and fixed-wing planes, marking a world-class innovation programme. The rotary fleet will include 18 helicopters: nine AW189s, three S-92s, and six brand-new Leonardo AW139s. The fixed-wing lineup will feature six King Airs (B350, B350ER, B200) plus a Schiebel Camcopter S-100 UAS drone.
Homegrown Tech with a Global Pedigree
“We are thrilled to be selected by Nova Systems as part of their mission system for the UK MCA,” said Andrew Munro, Smith Myers’ Managing Director. “ARTEMIS is a fully UK-developed and produced technology, recognised by the Royal Aeronautical Society with its Silver Medal award. We look forward with pride to ARTEMIS driving faster, positive Search & Rescue outcomes for the UK Maritime Coastguard Agency.”
ARTEMIS has been saving lives globally since 2017, notably with the Royal Norwegian Airforce on their Leonardo AW101 SAR helicopters. Its expanding global footprint spans the UK, Europe, North America, South America, and the Middle East.
