Flu Crisis Hits Hard: Seven UK Hospitals Sound Alarm
Southampton Hospital Joins Flu Meltdown
Southampton General Hospital has sounded the alarm as the UK’s flu crisis deepens. It’s the seventh NHS hospital this week to declare a critical incident amid a relentless surge in flu cases sweeping the nation. Early today, University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust issued a major alert warning of soaring pressure on services.
Hospitals Struggle as Flu Floods A&E Wards
Across the country, hospitals are overwhelmed. Birmingham’s University Hospitals Trust, managing Good Hope, Heartlands, Queen Elizabeth, and Solihull, declared critical incidents as bed shortages hit crisis point. They revealed a staggering 269 flu patients currently hospitalised.
Meanwhile, University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust briefly declared a critical incident for Stoke and Stafford hospitals before stepping back this afternoon.
Masks Make a Comeback as NHS Battles Flu Surge
NHS staff and patients are back behind masks to fight the flu onslaught driven by a mutated H3N2 strain. Frimley NHS Foundation Trust has mandated fluid-resistant surgical masks for clinical ward staff amid soaring infections. Mask rules are also back in force at hospitals across the Midlands, Surrey, Sussex, and Swindon, especially in A&E and care areas.
Dr Diane Adamson, UHNM Chief Medical Officer, warned: “Emergency departments will prioritise the sickest patients, which means longer delays for some. We ask the public to only use A&E for serious or life-threatening emergencies. Please arrange timely pick-ups for discharged patients.”
Brits Stockpile Masks and Sanitiser as Flu Fears Spike
Flu fears are driving a rush for masks, hand sanitiser, and flu meds across the UK. Rita Arora, a Fulham pharmacist, told Metro: “People are treating flu like Covid-19—trying hard not to get sick or spread it.” After masks faded post-pandemic, they’re now flying off shelves again.
