Storm Éowyn Knocks Out Power to 70,000 Across UK

SP Energy Networks is battling fierce conditions to restore power after Storm Éowyn unleashed some of the strongest winds in decades. Over 70,000 customers remain in the dark across central and southern Scotland, North Wales, and the west of England.

Wild Winds and Widespread Damage

The “once in a generation” storm hammered parts of Scotland with gusts topping 100mph, triggering a rare red weather warning. Fallen trees and debris have torn down power lines, making repair work a dangerous challenge. The worst-hit areas include central and southern Scotland, where 68,000 customers are currently offline, plus another 2,000 in the Manweb region.

SP Energy Networks Scrambles Repair Crews

Multiple repair teams have been dispatched, but high winds and unsafe conditions are delaying progress. Guy Jefferson, Managing Director of SP Energy Networks’ Transmission division, said:

“With red and amber warnings issued, we positioned teams and resources ahead of Storm Éowyn. We’ve contacted vulnerable customers on our Priority Services Register for extra support. The winds have been over 100mph in Scotland, making it tough to assess and fix damage quickly. We’re committed to restoring power as soon as it’s safe.”

Support for Vulnerable Customers and Emergency Measures

SP Energy Networks has reached out to 75,000 vulnerable customers across the region and set up warm hubs, food vans, and hotel stays for those in urgent need. Jefferson urged anyone experiencing power outages to report them quickly:

“If you’re without power, please report it via our website or call 105, the free national helpline. We’re doing everything to restore your service as fast as possible.”

Investment in Resilience Tested by Storm

Despite billions invested in strengthening the network, extreme weather like Storm Éowyn makes power disruptions more likely. SP Energy Networks prioritises customer safety amid ongoing recovery efforts, warning that repairs will continue as conditions improve.
