Massive Transformers Haul Stuns Sussex Roads in Police-Escorted Convoy

National Grid pulled off a colossal feat on Sunday, hauling two giant Super Grid Transformers from Shoreham Port in Brighton all the way to the new substation in Little Horsted, Uckfield. This vital operation, part of a Sussex power upgrade, was executed flawlessly with a police escort guiding the convoy through 24 miles of roads.

Slow and Steady: Eight-Hour Convoy Crawl

The massive transformers set off at 8 a.m., inching along at a snail’s pace of 12 mph. The gruelling eight-hour trek took the convoy along the A27, A26, and a string of local roads. Traffic diversions were in place to ease hold-ups, and despite a few minor delays, the journey wrapped up on time without major chaos. National Grid praised the meticulous planning and public cooperation that kept the operation smooth.

Roads Closed, Detours All Around

The transformers’ monstrous size meant the convoy had to avoid the Patcham Viaduct on the A27, diverting onto the A23 for safer passage. This caused temporary road closures on the A27 and A23, with official diversions funneling vehicles via the A270, Old Shoreham Road, and A293. Drivers were urged to ignore their sat-navs and follow the clear road signs instead.

Local Residents Hold the Key to Success

“We thank locals and commuters for their patience and cooperation, especially those who kept roads clear of parked cars,” a National Grid spokesperson said. “Their help was crucial in ensuring the convoy moved safely and on schedule.”

With the transformers now safely installed at Little Horsted, Sussex looks set for a power boost that promises better reliability. National Grid sent a big thank you to the community for sticking with them through the disruption caused by this essential upgrade.
