Surrey Fire Service Launches Be Water Aware Campaign to Tackle Drowning Risks
Surrey Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) is stepping up to tackle the hidden dangers lurking in open waters. Their Be Water Aware campaign will run from April 22 to 28, 2024, aiming to educate the public on how to stay safe and respond to water emergencies.
Surrey’s Waters Pose Hidden Dangers, Warn Experts
Gary Bryant, Water Rescue Lead and Station Commander at SFRS, warns that even strong swimmers are at risk. “Hidden hazards beneath the surface and cold-water shock can catch anyone off guard,” he said, especially as the warmer months invite more people into Surrey’s waters.
Shocking Stats: Who’s at Risk?
The Water Incident Database reveals some alarming figures. The 20-29 and 50-59 age groups are the most affected by accidental drownings, making awareness and caution essential.
Top Tips to Keep You Afloat
As part of the campaign, SFRS shares vital water safety advice. If you find yourself struggling in water, remember:
- Tilt your head back with ears submerged
- Relax and breathe normally
- Use your hands to help you float
- Spread your arms and legs
- Once calm, call for help or swim to safety
When helping others, follow the “Call, Tell, Throw” method:
- Call 999 immediately
- Tell the person to float on their back
- Throw a flotation aid if available
