Surrey’s Trailblazing First Female Firefighter Retires After 30 Years
Paula Hartwell has made history once again—this time by hanging up her helmet after three decades with Surrey Fire and Rescue Service. Joining in January 1993 as the service’s very first female firefighter, Paula broke barriers and blazed a trail for women in the fire service.
From Firefighter to Station Commander
Paula started her career at Chertsey Fire Station and quickly climbed the ranks. She became a Leading Firefighter, then Watch Commander across various stations and fire safety departments. Eventually, she took the reins as Station Commander at Woking Fire Station. After stints with the Operations Assurance Team and Community Intelligence, she returned to Woking to wrap up her distinguished career.
“I have enjoyed being part of the Surrey Fire and Rescue Service team – helping the communities which we serve and every day trying to make a difference,” Paula reflected. “It has been both challenging and rewarding, I have learned many skills over the years and have great memories. I have loved my career immensely and hope that many more women take on the role.”
A Legacy That Inspires
Paula also balanced a busy home life, raising three daughters with partner Tony while serving the community. Her impact hasn’t gone unnoticed:
Dan Quin, Chief Fire Officer, said: “What a fantastic legacy Paula leaves behind here in Surrey – our first female firefighter paving the way for many more women after her. She’s shown fire and rescue is a top career choice for all. I’ve had the privilege of working with Paula for over 20 years and know she will be greatly missed. Thank you, Paula.”
