Demolition Starts on Fire-Hit Royal Albion Hotel in Brighton

Demolition work kicked off this afternoon on Brighton’s Royal Albion Hotel, devastated by a fierce blaze just days ago. The fire broke out last Saturday afternoon, causing severe damage to the iconic building.

Fire Service Battles Aftermath to Keep Area Safe

East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service battled smaller flare-ups overnight Monday to prevent the fire from reigniting. Their firefighters have continued to visit the site through Tuesday night, checking the building’s stability as 24/7 security watches over the scene.

Because of the fire’s severity, demolition was delayed but is now underway and expected to take two to three weeks. Safety barriers have been put up around the hotel, with contractors constantly monitoring risks.

Road Closures and Safety Warnings in Place

Authorities urge locals and visitors to steer clear of the area. Road diversions redirect traffic from Kings Road (A259) between the Old Steine roundabout and East Street and most of Pool Valley, with closures likely to last three weeks due to debris hazards.

If you spot dust or smoke, keep windows and doors shut. In any emergency involving visible flames or heavy smoke, call 999 immediately.

Council Vows to Preserve Historic Hotel Features

“Due to health and safety concerns, the demolition of part of the Royal Albion Hotel has been rescheduled for tomorrow. Our goal is to salvage as much of this iconic heritage building as possible, and we have instructed our contractors accordingly. We will save and reuse as many original features as we can, or create molds and copies to maintain its historic character.” – Councillor Bella Sankey, Council Leader

Community Support and Health Reassurances

Residents displaced by the fire can get help by contacting the housing team at [email protected] or calling 01273 294 400 (option 1). Businesses outside the cordon may reopen but should conduct their own safety checks.

Worried about asbestos? Alistair Hill, Director of Public Health, reassures the public:

“We understand concerns about asbestos, but the health risk is minimal. Asbestos was present in ceiling coatings, but significant exposure after the fire is very unlikely. The area is sealed off, and asbestos hasn’t spread beyond the zone. Demolition contractors will keep assessing risks, with security staying in place. Residents and businesses should keep windows and doors closed if smoke or dust appears during the work.”

Brighton’s tough fight to save the Royal Albion Hotel continues amid fire damage and ongoing safety efforts.
