Students at University of Sussex slam poor disabled access with protest outside main library

This Wednesday (5th December), pupils at the University of Sussex took to the streets outside the main library in a fiery protest over shoddy disabled access and baffling signage.

Library access is a nightmare for disabled students

The library’s main entrance is up a brutal flight of stairs. Meanwhile, the supposedly “step-free” route is a whopping seven-minute trek that winds around the building, leaving disabled students facing a gruelling detour just to get in.

Protesters demand clear signs and fair access

Campaigning students urged both their peers and university staff to try the official disabled access route in a bid to highlight its absurd length and obscurity.

“We are here today to protest inadequate signage around Sussex University’s Library,” one student told Sussex News. “We want proper signs showing both the shortcut and non-shortcut routes. Every student and member of the public should be able to access our library!”

The protest shines a spotlight on a campus access issue that needs urgent fixing – fast.
