Road Closures & Flooded Shops Bring Local Chaos
The floodwaters spilled onto roads leading to local shops and restaurants, forcing the Metropolitan Police to cordon off affected areas. The closure stretches from A2212 Burnt Ash Road in Lee Green to Weigall Road, causing major disruptions for commuters and shoppers alike. The London Fire Brigade has urged people to avoid the area while they work to control the situation.
Thames Water Apologises and Works to Fix Burst Pipe
Thames Water issued an apology for the water issues affecting local homes, explaining engineers are on site trying to stem the flow. “We’re on site and working to shut off flow from the burst,” said a spokesperson. “After that, supplies should begin to return to the affected area. We also apologise to drivers inconvenienced by the A20 closure.”
Firefighters Battle Floodwaters Around the Clock
Firefighters from Lewisham, Eltham, East Greenwich, and nearby stations have been deployed since the alarm at 4:38 a.m. They’re focused on diverting floodwater from the huge area, roughly 600m by 200m, that’s been underwater.
“Ten fire engines and around 70 firefighters have been called to flooding on Meadowcourt Road in Blackheath and Eltham Road,” said a London Fire Brigade spokesman. “Crews are working tirelessly to manage the impact.”
