Alcohol Deaths Soar by 27% in UK Amid Pandemic

Alcohol-Related Deaths Skyrocket

The UK saw a shocking 27% jump in alcohol-specific deaths in 2021 compared to 2019. Official figures reveal 9,641 people died from alcohol-related causes last year, up from 7,565 before the pandemic.

Experts blame stress and isolation during Covid lockdowns, with many turning to alcohol for comfort. Struggling drinkers also found it harder to get the help they needed, making the crisis worse.

Scotland Leads the Grim Statistics

Breaking it down by nation, Scotland topped the charts with 22.4 deaths per 100,000 people, followed by Northern Ireland (19.3), Wales (15), and the UK average of 13.9.

Male deaths were roughly double those of females in 2021: 20.1 per 100,000 for men compared to 9.9 for women.

Charities and GPs Warn of a Growing Crisis

Karen Tyrell, CEO of Drinkaware, called the stats “absolutely devastating.”

“It is unacceptable that in one of the world’s richest countries, alcohol-related deaths are four times higher among men in the poorest areas than in wealthy ones.”

“Heavy drinkers upped their intake during the pandemic, but fewer social contacts and less access to support meant warning signs were missed. The perfect storm is here.”

Doctors confirm they’re seeing younger patients with severe alcohol damage. Hertfordshire GP Dr Suhail Hussain said,

“We’re now treating end-stage liver failure and cirrhosis in people in their 40s, not their 70s.”

“Lockdowns and disrupted routines pushed many to drink earlier and more often—what started as an occasional glass turned into full-blown addiction.”

Rising living costs and economic pressures are only adding to the deadly trend, warn health professionals.
