Controversy as Bibby Stockholm Barge Set to House Migrants in Dorset
Cost Cuts Spark Outrage
The Bibby Stockholm, a three-storey barge, is poised to house migrants while their asylum claims are processed. Officials insist it’s a cheaper alternative to hotels, which cost the UK over £6 million a day to accommodate migrants. Docked at Portland Port, the vessel offers 222 basic rooms with healthcare and catering onboard.
Local Outcry and Fears for Safety
But not everyone is on board. Local groups, refugee charities, and Tory MP Richard Drax have slammed the plan. Drax warned that “every action’s being looked at” amid rising concerns. Amnesty International called the move “ministerial cruelty” and urged the government to scrap the scheme immediately.
Dark Past Haunts the Barge
The Bibby Stockholm once drew fire from the Dutch government for keeping asylum seekers in what was described as an “oppressive environment.” Although refurbished, many remain worried about the welfare and safety of migrants housed off the Dorset coast.
Environmental and Community Backlash
Local charities and community groups argue the barge will cause major disruption and harm the local environment. They say better, less controversial options exist to accommodate vulnerable migrants without upsetting residents or risking their safety.
