Four Fire Engines Race to Night Blaze in Stonebridge Park Flat
In the early hours of January 19, firefighters scrambled to a flat fire on Marshall Street, Stonebridge Park. Around 25 brave crew members across four fire engines fought to control the blaze that severely damaged a kitchen in a split-level maisonette spanning the second and third floors.
Five Escape, Two Treated for Smoke Inhalation
Before the London Fire Brigade (LFB) arrived, five occupants managed to escape the smoke-filled flat. Paramedics from the London Ambulance Service treated two women for smoke inhalation at the scene.
Candle Blamed for Fire – Firefighters Issue Stark Warning
The blaze is believed to have started accidentally from a candle left unattended. A spokesperson from the London Fire Brigade warned:
“Candles, incense sticks, and oil burners are among the most common causes of house fires. Never leave candles unattended and keep them away from anything flammable.” “Always use heat-resistant holders and place candles on stable surfaces to prevent them tipping over.”
The LFB was called out at 2.14am and managed to extinguish the fire by 3.59am. Firefighters from Willesden, Park Royal, and Wembley stations all rushed to the scene.
Firefighter Candle Safety Tips
- Always extinguish candles, incense, or oil burners before leaving a room or going to bed.
- Use heat-resistant holders and place candles on sturdy, stable surfaces.
- Keep all flame sources away from curtains, furniture, clothes, and hair.
- Beware tea lights—they can get extremely hot and melt through plastic surfaces like TVs or baths.
- Consider switching to LED candles as a safe alternative that won’t start fires if left burning.
