Shock as The Jam’s Rick Buckler Dies Aged 69
February 18, 2025 – Rick Buckler, the legendary drummer behind iconic British band The Jam, has died at 69 after a brief illness. His former bandmates confirmed the heartbreaking news today.
Weller and Foxton Lead Emotional Tributes
Paul Weller and Bruce Foxton, Buckler’s long-time bandmates, paid touching tributes to the rhythm master and friend.
“I’m shocked and saddened by Rick’s passing. I’m thinking back to us all rehearsing in my bedroom in Stanley Road, Woking. To all the pubs and clubs we played at as kids, to eventually making a record,” Weller wrote.
“What a journey! We went far beyond our dreams, and what we made stands the test of time. My deepest sympathy to all family and friends – P.W x.”
Foxton added:
“I was shocked and devastated to hear the very sad news today. Rick was a good guy and a great drummer whose innovative drum patterns helped shape our songs.”
“I’m glad we had the chance to work together as much as we did. My thoughts are with Leslie and his family at this very difficult time.”
Battling Illness: Tour Scrapped Before Death
Rick had recently been forced to cancel his spoken word tour due to ongoing health problems. A statement from his team earlier this month revealed:
“Rick was really excited to bring his updated ‘In Conversation’ show to life, but presently, he has been advised to rest, repair, and build his physical strength.”
The Jam’s Enduring Legacy
Buckler co-founded The Jam with Weller and Foxton back in the 1970s while at Sheerwater Secondary School. The band scored massive hits including “Going Underground,” “The Eton Rifles,” and “Town Called Malice.”
The Jam famously split in 1982 under Weller’s direction. Buckler later reflected:
“There was no great scheme. The reason that Paul gave us for leaving the band was rubbish, basically.”
After The Jam’s breakup, Buckler formed Time UK and moved into music production, running a studio in Islington.
Fans Mourn a Drumming Legend
Social media flooded with heartfelt messages from fans and fellow musicians:
- “RIP Rick Buckler. Thanks for all the good times and great memories.”
- “So sad to hear the news of Rick Buckler of The Jam passing. First band I ever saw live and still the best I’ve ever seen. RIP Rick.”
Rick Buckler’s pioneering drumming and influence on British music won’t be forgotten. His beat lives on in The Jam’s timeless classics, inspiring generations to come.
