Kent Fire Chiefs Scoop Top Honours in Queen’s Birthday List

Two Kent Fire and Rescue Service (KFRS) heroes have been handed big accolades in the 2020 Queen’s Birthday Honours. Sean Bone-Knell, former Director of Operations, and Tina Butler, current Head of Procurement, have both been recognised for their outstanding services.

Sean Bone-Knell Earns Queen’s Fire Service Medal

Retired this March after 33 years on the frontline, Sean picked up the prestigious Queen’s Fire Service Medal. It’s awarded only to those who show distinguished service or gallantry in UK and Commonwealth fire services.

“I was so surprised and proud when I first found out, having only just adjusted to life after the fire and rescue service,” Sean said.

Sean’s influence went beyond Kent. He held three key roles with the National Fire Chiefs Council: Marine Firefighting Lead Officer, Road Safety Lead Officer, and Dementia Lead Officer. His work helped shape national fire policy and protect communities across the UK.

“My career had many unforgettable moments, including planning for the Tour de France and Olympics in Kent. It’s taught me to cherish every moment in this beautiful County,” he added.

He paid tribute to his family: “My wife Teresa and daughters Emily and Lucy have always supported me. This honour wouldn’t have been possible without them.”

Tina Butler Bags MBE for Life-Saving PPE Efforts

Tina Butler earned an MBE for her vital role during the COVID-19 crisis. She led the charge in securing PPE for frontline workers across the UK, ensuring key workers stayed safe amid the pandemic.

“I honestly couldn’t believe it at first; I had to read it twice. This is the proudest moment of my career,” Tina said.

Before COVID-19 hit, Tina was already working to improve PPE sourcing for firefighters. When lockdown struck, she spearheaded the National Fire Commercial Transformation Programme. Tina tapped into a vast network across industries to find gloves, masks, and sanitiser.

Her team rigorously vetted suppliers to avoid fake products and tackle risks of modern slavery. They supplied Fire and Rescue teams nationwide, maintaining critical protection for frontline heroes.

“I put every ounce of energy into making sure colleagues had the right protection. I’d do it all again in a heartbeat,” she said.

Tina also praised her “wonderful” team who engaged over 420 suppliers, securing a resilient national PPE supply.

KFRS Chief Hails Outstanding Achievements

Chief Executive Ann Millington praised Sean and Tina’s exceptional dedication.

“I’m immensely proud of both Sean and Tina. Their commitment to excellence and selfless dedication truly deserve this recognition,” she said.

“Working with these two has been a pleasure. They’re hugely respected and their honours will inspire others. I congratulate them both.”
