New Surrey Firefighter Recruits Pedal 543 Miles for Charity in Festive Challenge
Santa Suits and Sweat for The Fire Fighters Charity
Ten fresh recruits from Surrey Fire and Rescue Service are swapping hoses for handlebars this Christmas. On Wednesday 16 December, dressed as Santas, they’ll cycle the whopping 543 miles distance from their training HQ to their homes – all on indoor stationary bikes!
Their trusty instructors will also pedal alongside, racing to get home in time for mince pies and mulled wine. The festive spin-a-thon is all in aid of The Fire Fighters Charity, which supports the mental, physical, and social wellbeing of the UK’s firefighting family, past and present.
From Training to Teamwork: A Festive Fundraiser
The recruits began their 14-week training on 14 September and will graduate on 20 December. Steve Owen-Hughes, Surrey’s Chief Fire Officer, praised the effort:
“Charity events are a brilliant tradition for firefighters who complete their 14-week training. It’s a fantastic way of showcasing their skills and teamwork as well as raising money for an extremely worthy cause.”
Community Support and a Christmas Challenge
Denise Turner Stewart, Cabinet Member for Communities, said:
“We are very proud of our recruits who are already supporting their new fire family. This year has been unprecedented and challenging. The Fire Fighters Charity is a hugely worthwhile cause and, with many events cancelled due to Covid-19, our recruits have come up with innovative ways to raise funds.”
She added, “We are keen to support them and thankful for their efforts.”
