Millions Face Freezing Homes as Arctic Blast Hits UK
More than three million struggling UK households cannot afford to heat their homes during a brutal cold snap, new research reveals. The Met Office has issued a chilling warning: an Arctic blast will plunge temperatures as low as -10°C by week’s end.
Households Struggle to Stay Warm
The Joseph Rowntree Foundation’s latest study paints a grim picture. Around 710,000 families lack the cash for basics like warm clothing, heating, or even food. Another 2.5 million low-income households are going without these essentials altogether.
“The dangerously cold spell on the horizon is cause for concern,” said JRF senior economist Rachelle Earwaker. “People are forced to gamble their financial health and ability to take on more debt against their well-being in the absence of adequate heat, clothing, or hot food.”
Debt and Danger on the Rise
Surveying over 4,200 people in the bottom 40% income bracket, researchers found 4.3 million have cut back on heating costs. Many families are already racking up debts, with an average owed of more than £1,600.
Meanwhile, dangerous road conditions and delayed train journeys loom as the icy grip tightens. And with freezing temperatures expected to linger, the cold crisis shows no sign of easing.
