Homelessness on UK Railways Soars Amid Pandemic
Rough sleeping in the UK has surged by 36% during the pandemic, with railway networks becoming hotspots for vulnerable people living on the streets. In response, Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR), the UK’s largest train operator, has taken a bold step to tackle the crisis head-on.
GTR Pioneers Rail Industry’s First Rough Sleeping Charter
GTR is the first train company to sign the Rough Sleeping on Rail Charter, launched by Network Rail to protect homeless individuals and their communities across the rail network. The charter vows to offer support and pathways out of homelessness for those sleeping rough near railway lines.
The charter was signed by GTR’s Chief Operating Officer Steve White and witnessed by NOAH, a longtime homeless charity partner of GTR. This groundbreaking move is part of a wider collaboration aimed at helping every person sleeping rough along the rail routes.
GTR’s Ongoing Commitment to the Homeless
- Last year, GTR’s ‘Great Sock Appeal’ collected over 4,000 pairs of socks for homeless shelters.
- This year, GTR is launching e-learning for all staff to better assist homeless people they encounter.
Steve White said: “Homelessness is a significant issue for society. As another winter approaches, I’m proud to sign this charter, reflecting our commitment to break the cycle of rough sleeping and support the most vulnerable.”
Officials Praise GTR’s Groundbreaking Effort
Transport Secretary Grant Shapps added: “Every signature on this charter brings us closer to ending rough sleeping this Parliament. For those on our railway stations, especially as winter nears, life can be cruel. GTR stepping forward to help is hugely welcome.”
David Morris, CEO of NOAH Enterprise, praised the partnership, saying: “The new training will equip staff with knowledge about StreetLink—a vital tool connecting rough sleepers with support. We applaud GTR’s early adoption of the charter and their commitment to helping disadvantaged people access jobs and training.”
Rachel Hopkins MP for Luton commented: “It’s great to see GTR sign up and equip their staff to support those in need. NOAH’s involvement means more help for those with nowhere else to turn.”
