Rain and Thunderstorms Set to Batter UK This Week

Unsettled weather is here to stay as showers – some heavy and thundery – continue to drench the UK through midweek. From Wednesday, the wettest and most frequent downpours will focus on the northwest of England, Northern Ireland, and parts of northern Scotland.

Low Pressure Keeps Showers Coming

Met Office Chief Meteorologist Andy Page warned: “The UK is mainly under low-pressure influence, driving a showery regime. Expect some heavy, thundery showers at times this week.”

He added: “While not everyone will face the worst of the downpours, the weather will stay unsettled and cooler – a stark contrast to the scorching heatwaves we saw in June.”

Jet Stream Shift Brings Wet and Windy Weekend

The misery isn’t ending anytime soon. A change in the jet stream – powerful winds high above the Earth – is set to push wet and windy conditions into Friday and the weekend.

Met Office Meteorologist Alex Deakin explained in their exclusive YouTube ‘Deep Dive’ series: “The jet stream is shifting toward the UK from the southwest, steering low-pressure systems over us.”

He added: “This means some persistent rain, strong winds, and a continued spell of fresh, unsettled weather.”

Weekend Warnings Possible as Low Pressure Lingers

Low pressure will move from the southwest to the northeast over the weekend, dragging persistent rain across much of the country. Forecasters say rain warnings could be issued as the system’s track becomes clearer.

How Unusual Is This Weather?

After a record-breaking hot June, July is bringing a cooler, wetter mood. Despite the cooler start to the month, temperatures between 1 and 9 July remain close to average.

So while the UK dries out its suncream, be ready for more showers, thunder, and gusty winds in the coming days.
