Good news for classic car owners! Some vintage rides might escape the dreaded Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) charge – but only if they meet certain rules.
Historic Vehicles Get a Break
Transport for London (TfL) confirms that vehicles classed as “historic” don’t have to pay the ULEZ fee. According to TfL, all vehicles with a historic vehicle tax class are exempt from ULEZ charges. That means any motor built before January 1, 1973, skips the fee entirely, no matter if it’s used commercially or not.
How to Secure Your ULEZ Exemption
If you own a classic car, here’s what you need to do: apply with the DVLA to stop paying vehicle tax, provided your car is over 40 years old. The 40-year cut-off rolls forward each year – for example, when ULEZ launched in April 2019, vehicles built before 1979 qualified for historic status.
What If You Don’t Qualify?
If your car isn’t eligible, TfL’s ULEZ scrappage scheme offers cash help to switch to a cleaner vehicle. Otherwise, you’ll either have to pay the monthly ULEZ charge or think about upgrading to a compliant motor.
