Massive Lorry Crash Sparks Chaos on M6 Near Thelwall Viaduct

A huge lorry crash on the M6 near the Thelwall Viaduct has sparked major chaos and gridlocked traffic. On Monday evening, September 30, an HGV smashed through the safety barrier and plunged onto the embankment below, bringing the northbound carriageway to a crawl.

Emergency Teams Rush to Dramatic Scene

Police and fire crews scrambled to the scene where the lorry lay badly damaged, smoke rising from the wreckage beneath the motorway. Using specialist gear, rescue teams reached the trapped driver and rushed him to hospital. Thankfully, his injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

A Cheshire Fire and Rescue spokesperson said: “Firefighters were called to reports of a heavy goods vehicle that had left the carriageway between Junction 20 and 21 near the Thelwall Viaduct. On arrival, the HGV was found overturned on an embankment. Crews used technical rescue equipment to reach the casualty, who was handed to paramedics.”

Biodiesel Spill Adds to the Mess

Complicating the rescue, around 1,000 litres of biodiesel leaked from the lorry’s fuel tanks. Firefighters worked swiftly to contain the spill using water sprays and bunding to prevent further environmental damage.

Traffic Nightmare to Continue – Police Urge Drivers to Avoid Area

Thelwall Viaduct, a key crossing over the Manchester Ship Canal and River Mersey, faces heavy disruption. Cheshire Police confirmed three of four northbound lanes are shut due to serious barrier damage, leaving just one open lane operating under a reduced speed limit.

A police spokesperson warned: “These lane closures are expected to continue into the morning. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and find alternative routes.”

Drivers have already faced standstill traffic with delays estimated at 45 minutes or more. The disruption is spilling across the region as travellers desperately seek detours.

Authorities Seek Witnesses

Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the crash or has dash-cam footage to come forward. Anyone with information is urged to contact Cheshire Police to aid the ongoing investigation.

This is a breaking story. Stay tuned for updates as emergency crews work through the night to clear the scene and restore normal traffic flow.
