Drama in the Channel: 35 Migrants Rescued After Refusing Help
Early Morning Rescue Mission off Boulogne-sur-Mer
In a tense operation at dawn on November 26, 2023, CROSS Gris-Nez sprang into action to save 35 migrants stranded in the treacherous Strait of Pas-de-Calais. The maritime gendarmerie vessel Aber Wrac’h was first on the scene, offering urgent help to the migrant boat near Boulogne-sur-Mer — but shockingly, those onboard initially refused rescue.
Standoff at Sea as Migrants Refused Assistance
Despite the swift response, the migrants on the overcrowded boat didn’t want to be saved right away. The Aber Wrac’h kept a close watch, staying nearby as the situation unfolded. Later in the afternoon, CROSS Gris-Nez called in the powerful tug Abeille Normandie, leased by the French Navy, to monitor the distress vessel. Some migrants accepted the help, while others still said no.
Risks and Rescue: Difficult Decisions Made
With dangers mounting — including the risk of falling overboard, thermal shock, and trauma — authorities made the tough call to let the migrants press on with their perilous journey. Still, Abeille Normandie kept surveillance until finally escorting the rescued group safely back to the port of Boulogne-Sur-Mer by evening.
Channel Crossing Warning Issued
There are no active migrant rescue operations ongoing now. But the maritime prefect of the English Channel and North Sea issued a stark warning: this maritime hotspot sees over 400 commercial vessels a day, making it one of the busiest and deadliest sea routes globally. Even calm-looking waters can turn deadly in seconds.
If you face an emergency at sea, phone 196 or use VHF channel 16 immediately.
