Thousands Still in the Dark After Storm Gerrit Batters Scotland

Storm Gerrit has left a trail of chaos across Scotland, with thousands still battling power cuts into another night. Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) have restored electricity to over 40,000 homes, but nearly 3,000 households remain powerless amid tough conditions.

Power Outages Hit Hard Across Scotland

As of 4:45 pm Thursday, about 2,900 homes are still in the dark. The hardest hit areas include:

  • 1,080 homes in north-east Scotland
  • 818 homes in Argyll and West Highlands
  • 337 homes in the Highlands
  • 365 homes in Shetland
  • 464 homes in Tayside and Central

SSEN warns around 1,500 households may remain without power until Friday.

Cash Support and Help for Stranded Customers

SSEN is offering £30 per person daily to those without power for over 12 hours to cover food and drink expenses. Customers on the Priority Service Register facing outages longer than 24 hours can claim costs for alternative accommodation.

Andy Smith, operations director at SSEN, thanked the public for their patience. He said, “Our teams are working round the clock to reconnect as many customers as possible, prioritising those who have been off power the longest.”

Smith urged anyone needing assistance or advice to call the power outage helpline on 105.

Storm Gerrit’s Fallout: Travel Chaos and Flood Damage

The violent storm brought blizzards and flooding, wrecking homes and travel plans. Train services north of Perth and Dundee were cancelled, with key routes between Aberdeen, Dundee, and Inverness shut down. The A9 at Drumotcher in the Highlands was closed due to heavy snow, causing long delays.

While some roads have reopened, drivers are warned to remain cautious because of flooding and surface water. Public transport disruptions continue, with travellers urged to check with operators for real-time updates.

Ferry operator CalMac has cancelled and rescheduled several sailings on routes like Ardrossan-Brodick and Fionnphort-Iona. Passengers should follow CalMac’s updates on X (formerly Twitter).

Storm Gerrit’s aftermath highlights the ongoing struggles for Scottish residents and commuters, calling for vigilance and readiness as recovery efforts continue.
