NatWest App Crash Leaves Thousands Stranded for Nearly 10 Hours
Mobile Banking Nightmare
Thousands of NatWest customers were left stranded on Saturday as the bank’s mobile app suffered a massive outage. Starting in the early hours, users couldn’t check balances, transfer cash, or make payments. The app simply refused to open, sparking anger and anxiety nationwide.
One frustrated customer, 28-year-old Hannah Clarke from Birmingham, said, “I was trying to pay my rent this morning, but the app just wouldn’t open. I had no idea if the payment went through or if I was about to get a late fee.” Across social media, similar complaints poured in from users desperate for access to their own money.
Ten-Hour Disruption Hits Everyday Banking
The outage dragged on for nearly ten hours, affecting a huge slice of NatWest’s user base — many of whom rely solely on the app for day-to-day banking tasks. This hiccup couldn’t have come at a worse time, with bill payments and direct debits hanging in the balance.
Small business owner James Howard told us, “I couldn’t pay my suppliers this morning, which set my entire schedule back. I depend on that app for everything. Without it, I’m practically paralysed.”
NatWest Responds, But Cause Remains a Mystery
NatWest took to X (formerly Twitter) to admit the problem, saying, “We’re aware of an issue affecting our mobile app and are working hard to resolve it. We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused.” While services were gradually restored, the bank has yet to reveal what sparked the crash.
Financial technology analyst Peter Donovan warned, “With most customers now relying heavily on mobile apps, incidents like this show the danger of putting all services online without sufficient backups.”
Calls for Accountability and Better Backups
This latest meltdown isn’t NatWest’s first technical glitch — earlier this year, a smaller outage affected ATMs and sparked a similar backlash. Now, customers want answers and transparency.
The bank has urged anyone who suffered charges or losses directly because of the outage to contact support for possible compensation. But many remain sceptical, recalling past struggles to claim reimbursements after IT failures.
Amid rising dependence on digital-only banking, this debacle has left many rethinking their finances and considering multiple banking options to avoid being left in the lurch next time.
The app is back up, but for NatWest customers, the experience was a chilling reminder that a tech glitch can quickly turn into a full-blown crisis.
